Renting Heavy Equipment for the First Time? Read This First.
What to know before your first skid steer, excavator, or tractor rental — pickup, transport, fuel, insurance, and the questions worth asking.
Renting a piece of heavy equipment for the first time can feel intimidating, but it really isn't. Here's the short checklist we wish every first-time renter had before they showed up.
Before you book
- Know your job, not just the machine. Tell us what you're trying to do — we'll match the right size and attachment. A too-big machine costs more and is harder to move; a too-small one wastes your weekend.
- Measure your access. Gates, fences, low branches, soft yards. A standard skid steer is about 6 ft wide; a mini excavator is 3–5 ft.
- Pick a realistic time window. Daily, 3-day, weekly, and monthly rates all exist — weekly is usually the best value for any real project.
Transport
You have two options: pick it up yourself with an appropriate trailer and tow vehicle, or have us deliver. Most homeowners deliver — a loaded skid steer or mini excavator on a trailer is heavier than most half-ton trucks should pull.
Fuel, fluids, and damage
- Machines come fueled and you return them fueled (we'll show you the fill point).
- Don't add fluids — if something looks off, stop and call us.
- Normal wear is on us. Damage from misuse (like trying to dig with the bucket curled wrong, or running an attachment into a fence) is on you. A damage waiver is available.
The walk-around
When you pick up or take delivery, we walk you through the controls, the safety basics, and how to start and stop the machine. Ask every question you have right then — there's no dumb question, and we'd much rather spend ten extra minutes at pickup than have you frustrated on site.
Questions worth asking us
- "What attachment is best for what I'm doing?"
- "Is the ground likely to be too wet for this machine this week?"
- "Can I keep it an extra day if I'm not done?"
- "What do I do if something breaks?"
